Got to the Eastbourne Extreme at about 9.15 and with only a small amount of
time to play, I quickly rigged a 5.7 on my Syncro, said hello to PaulP, and
belted downwind to the Exocet trailer to have a play. Big thanks to Stacey
and usurf for the loan of kit. I had a good long go on the Cross 118 with
a 5.7 and a 6.5 and it definitely feels smaller than most 120 boards I've
sailed - very nice. Yeah the straps are inboard, but didn't really notice
- I just took my foot halfway out of the strap on a couple of the very well
powered runs. Also has a go on the S-Cross 120, which was horrible.
Unless you sail on dead flat water, I just can't see why people buy these
kinds of boards. It limits you to just one thing - burning along in a
straight line. OK, it was a bit of a buzz belting along on a long reach,
but they're rubbish to gybe, horrible off the plane - just pointless. Also
had a go on the Kona - now that was fun. Fully powered with a 7.5 and with
a smile on my face the whole time. If I lived right on the beach and could
leave it in my back yard, then I'd have one, but the thought of sticking it
on my car roof fills me with horror. It was great fun planing along with a
deck the size of an aircraft carrier powering through the chop. Almost got
it airbourne a couple of times. The wind was a bit gusty so wierdly, I got
to use a 5.7, 6.5, 75. and 7.9 and they were all the right size most of the
time - very odd Shows, that it probably makes sense to have less kit, then
there are less decisions to make. Managed to sail the Exo boards with boots
and even a borrowed Tush rig - didn't get shot at once.
The event itself looked pretty lively for it's opening hours. The racers,
as always, were pretty intimidating. No smiles, massive rigs and a general
feeling that I should be steering clear. Having met individual racers on
various beaches I absolutely know that they are a friendly bunch, but
there's something about an event that is flipping intimidating.
Great to see Krafty, usurf, RichC and meet Stacey. Best thing of the day -
the Kona. Just hilarious
